Fort Wayne TinCaps Welcomes Back Jonathan Mathews as Manager
Mike Nutter, President of the Fort Wayne TinCaps, expressed initial concern upon receiving a call from Jonathan Mathews, the San Diego Padres' minor league hitting coordinator and former TinCaps manager. Following the departure of last year's manager Lukas Ray to the Toronto Blue Jays and pitching coach Thomas Eshelman to the Baltimore Orioles, Mathews confirmed he would return to Fort Wayne for a second managerial stint. Under Mathews' leadership, the TinCaps achieved a second-half East Division title in 2023, marking their last playoff appearance in the Midwest League. After two years in various coaching roles within the Padres organization, Mathews chose to manage the TinCaps over the Double-A San Antonio Missions, citing his strong connection to Fort Wayne and its staff. He highlighted the importance of camaraderie and competition in managing a team. The upcoming season will also see familiar faces on the coaching staff, including hitting coach Jerry Downs and bench coach Luis Mendez. The TinCaps' season is set to commence on April 3, with their home opener scheduled for April 7 against the Lansing Lugnuts.
